‘Mulberry Dreams’ selected for RBSA Portrait Prize exhibition
I’m delighted to share that my painting ‘Mulberry Dreams’ has been selected for the RBSA Portrait Prize 2026 exhibition at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists!
The RBSA Portrait Prize is a celebration of portraiture, one of the oldest and most enduring artistic traditions. From its historical role in preserving likeness and identity to its’ more contemporary exploration of emotion and the inner self, RBSA says ‘portraits allow us the unique gift of being able to connect with individuals, both living and dead.’
‘Mulberry Dreams’ is a mixed media painting that sits between serenity and quiet vigilance. Though composed and tranquil, the figure carries an awareness of the world around her as she glances over her shoulder. She is both poised and in control.
A soft palette of dusky pinks, wine reds, and muted greens shapes the atmosphere of the piece. In creating this work, I was interested in exploring the idea that strength does not always present itself through boldness or intensity, but can instead emerge instead through softness and restraint. The moths that entwine with the figure’s face act as both veil and lift, at once shielding and gently carrying her, introducing a sense of movement and transformation.
This year’s exhibition has been selected by a distinguished panel including:
Brian Bishop – Senior Lecturer & Course Director at Birmingham School of Art
Anthony Connolly RP – President of Royal Society of Portrait Painters
Dr Hannah Higham – Head of Collections at Royal Academy of Arts
I’m very much looking forward to seeing the full exhibition and connecting with fellow artists at the preview.
